Sophie Ruth Baldwin, 92, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2017 at the home of her daughter Kim, where she had been residing the past few years, with her two daughters, Kim and Maureen, by her side. She was the widow of Louis Baldwin, who died May 13, 1992.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on December 18, 1924, Sophie was the daughter of the late Julia and Martin Kenney. Sophie met her beloved husband, Louis, at an army dance in Aberdeen, Maryland, and it was love at first site. They were married on August 2, 1945, and found out the war was over on their honeymoon. They shared a fairytale love one can only dream of, and it brings the family great solace knowing they are reunited in our Heavenly home.
After their marriage, they moved to New Jersey where they raised their three children. In 1960, they bought a cottage at Newton Lake, which became their permanent home upon Louis's retirement in 1985. The lake house was the gathering place for the family and extended family, and the memories that were created there will be cherished forever.
Sophie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who is survived by daughters, Maureen Katherine Baldwin, Durham, New Hampshire, and Kimberly Anne Baldwin, Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, six grandchildren, Alex Baldwin, Joshua Kubalak, Shaina Kubalak, Joseph Kubalak, Jared Kubalak, and Nikki Kubalak, and many nieces and nephews, who all love her dearly.
Sophie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis; son, John Baldwin; three sisters, Alice Schwartz, Jane Clark, and Julia Schmidt; three brothers, John Kenney, Reverend Joseph Kenney and Reverend Martin Kenney.
Sophie loved the Boston Red Sox in her later years and spent many hours enjoying the games with her family. One of her favorite places to go was Fenway Park.
Sophie was exceptionally kind and loving and taught her family the true meaning of unconditional love, generosity, and gratitude. Her motto was, "money is only as good as what it can do to help people", and her random acts of kindness and generosity touched many lives. Her loving spirit will continue to live in the hearts of all who were touched by her big heart. One of her last words were "I love 'Love'"!
