Harry J. Witko

Harry J. Witko, 77, of Tunkhannock, PA, died Monday, December 24, 2018 at home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born January 12, 1941 in Peckville, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Jane Fowler Witko.

Harry entered the Army at the age of 17 and served during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Captain after 22 years of service. He earned his GED in the military and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He also received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Overseas Service Bars, Army Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was very proud of his Army career.

After the military, he became a farrier and worked at Pocono Downs. He owned and trained numerous race horses and enjoyed chess, poker, fishing and his cats.

He is survived by one son: Harry Witko, Jr. of Dunmore, PA; one daughter: Dawn Witko of Greenfield Township, PA; one grandson: Dillon Burnside of Greenfield Township, PA; wife: Mary Diane Lynch of Greenfield Township, PA; one sister: Ruth Plerhoples and husband James of Pennsville, NJ; two brothers: Michael Witko and wife Lynda and Robert Witko, all of Greenfield Township, PA; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by twin sons: Adam and Aaron Witko; two sisters: Jane Marie Kobesky and Linda Napolitan.

The funeral with military honors was held Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in St. James-St. George Episcopal Church, 398 Washington Avenue, Jermyn, PA, celebrated by Father Dan Jones. Inurnment, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Friends called Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Arrangements were under the care of the Shifler-Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Clifford, PA.
