Obituary of John S. Niles, III.

John Southworth Niles, III., 84, of Crystal Lake, PA, died Sunday, July 1, 2018, at home of a heart attack.   

Born December 3, 1933 in Carbondale, PA, he was the son of the late Dr. John Southworth Niles, Jr. and Helen Hemelright Niles.

John was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH, and earned a psychology degree from Yale University where he also held a world record for the swim team in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

He was a proud lieutenant in the Marine Corps; he loved the Marine Corps. He had a love and loyalty for Crystal Lake and its history. He started his career with KVP Sutherland in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He then worked on farms in Salinas, Kansas and Cold Spring, Pennsylvania.

He derived the most satisfaction while working as a counselor with Geisinger Marworth, Waverly, PA. Upon hearing of his death, a colleague noted that “he was very much admired in the world of recovery.” He later held weekly AA meetings at his home at Crystal Lake, PA.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, nature, his Chesapeake Bay retrievers, jazz piano, and sports of all kinds, which he excelled at.

He is survived by two sons: John Southworth Niles, IV. and wife Kimberly of Berwyn, PA, and David Axford Niles and wife Dana of Merion Station, PA; one daughter: Elizabeth Colgate Niles of West Palm Beach, FL; eight grandchildren: Sam, Sydney, Sophie, William, Hadley, Tyler, Lukas and Lily Niles and one brother: Nicholas Hemelright Niles and wife Maggie of Blooming Grove, PA.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Arthur David Niles.

A private memorial service was held at the convenience of the family at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly, PA.

Arrangements were under the care of the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
