Obituary of Florence Mondro

Florence Mondro, aged 95, died peacefully at home in Dickson City, PA, on the afternoon of July 4, 2020. Her husband of 59 years was the late Mitchell "Mac" Mondro.

Born April 29, 1925 in Blakely, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Sowienski) Toton. Florence graduated from Blakely High School in 1942. After her marriage in 1945, she moved to Dickson City and had lived there for the last 75 years.

For over 40 years, Florence worked side-by-side with her husband Mac as co-owners and operators of Mondro's Market on Main Street, Dickson City. She and Mac were famous throughout the Valley for their delicious homemade pierogi and kielbasi.

In addition to Mondro's Market, Florence operated Polonez Parcel Service for over 35 years, offering an affordable way for people to send packages to friends and family in Poland and other European countries. She also was an insurance agent affiliated with The Polish National Union of America.

A lifelong member of St. Adalbert's Polish National Catholic Church, Dickson City, and was actively involved in many of the church's organizations and societies.

Florence was a gifted seamstress, sewing everything from wedding gowns to doll clothes. Once retired, she and Mac traveled throughout the United States and Europe. Visiting family in Poland was a highlight of their travels. Also, an avid fan of Penn State Football, she travelled to State College for her first Penn State game when she was 88.

She is survived by her children: Michele Srebro, JoAnn Appleyard, and Mitchell Mondro and wife Ellen; son-in-law: Jim Palumbo; sisters: Dorothy Markiewicz, and Michaelene Pane; brother: Thomas Toton and wife Joyce; grandchildren: James Palumbo and wife Leiha Macauley, Nathan Palumbo and wife Erin, Alexandra (Srebro) Semon and husband Nick, Tessa Srebro and husband Samiur Rahman, Mitchell and Alex Mondro; and great-grandchildren: Jack, Ryan, Eddie, Billy, Owen and Nelle Palumbo; Josephine and Ingrid Semon.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter: Karen Palumbo; sons-in-law: Anthony Srebro and Ron Appleyard; brother: Joseph Toton, and sisters: Josephine Toton, Mildred Mayorowski, and Janet Neyman.

The family would like to express its most sincere appreciation to Florence's caregivers, Trisha, Christine, Florence, and Dianne for their invaluable support and comfort.

A private Mass for family was held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at St. Adalbert's Polish National Catholic Church, Dickson City, PA, celebrated by V. Rev. William Chromey, pastor. Interment, parish Cemetery, Dickson City, PA.

Pallbearers: Mitchell Mondro, Jim Palumbo, James Palumbo, Nathan Palumbo, Mitchell Mondro and Alex Mondro

Arrangements were entrusted to Florence's nephews at Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Carbondale, PA.
