Obituary of Frank C. Grecco, Jr.

Frank C. "Deacon" Grecco, Jr., 74, of Carbondale, PA, died Wednesday morning, January 27, 2021 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, PA, after a brief illness.

Born January 10, 1947 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Frank C. "Deacon" Grecco, Sr., former Treasurer of the Lackawanna County Republican Committee and the late Eleanor Burns Grecco.

Deacon was a 1964 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, where he played football and basketball. He started his career at Sears in the Viewmont Mall as catalog sales manager and in 1978 became its head of security. He was later employed by UGI gas and electric which he retired from.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Moxie Club, Carbondale. He was a supporter of athletics for area youths and was honored by the Carbondale Babe Ruth League for 20 years of faithful and dedicated service. Deacon also wrote a weekly sports column called "Deacon's Corner" for The Carbondale Miner. He was a PIAA basketball official for over 30 years and was a former president of its Mid-Valley Chapter. He was an avid New York Giants and Yankees fan. After the death of his father, he organized the annual Frank "Deacon" Grecco Memorial Golf Tournament which donated its proceeds to area non-profit causes.

Active in Republican Party politics, he won a one-year term for Carbondale City Council in 1976 and later won two four years terms for council in 1979 and 1983. While on city council, he served as its president and vice president and also served on the board of the newly formed Carbondale Housing Corporation under Mayor Fred Mancuso. He was also appointed to the advisory committee of Mayor Charlotte Moro in 1984. He was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees at Farview State Hospital having been appointed by Gov. Dick Thornburg in 1980. It was at Farview that he met his longtime companion Sandy Thorpe, who preceded him in death in 1998. In 1999, he was the Republican nominee in the Carbondale mayoral race.

He is survived by a nephew: Jim Stoklosa and wife, Susan of Union Dale, PA; two great nephews: Jimmy Stoklosa and wife, Kristi and Chris Stoklosa and girlfriend, Jess Bruce; a great-great niece, Ella Stoklosa, whom Deacon fondly called his "Ella Bella"; and several cousins.

He was also preceded in death by his sister: Betty Jean Stoklosa and husband, Francis.

The funeral was held Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. from Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 89 Farview Street, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale, celebrated by Rev. Kevin Miller, assistant pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.

Pallbearers: Jimmy Stoklosa, Chris Stoklosa, Joseph Bianco, Andy Cerra, Thomas Walsh and Peter Nakonechny.

Viewing hours were held on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 5-7 p.m.
